Giving Your Cat Treats - Does He Need Them, and is it the Right Thing to Do For Your Pet?

Giving your cat a little something special from time to time will not do him any harm, and may actually be useful in training situations. There are some things to keep in mind, however, when giving your cat treats:

- Keep all things in moderation. Cat treats, whether they are store-bought or from your dinner plate, do not make for a good diet for your cat. Make sure the majority of his food is a high quality, balanced, and complete diet.

- Avoid some foods as treats entirely. Food that is heavily spiced, or contains onions, can upset your cat's digestive system, and possibly lead to vomiting and diarrhea. Onion also can lead to severe blood problems in cats. Avoid onion or onion powder in any food or treat you prepare for your cat.

- If your cat is overweight, you should not be giving him treats at all. The health of your cat is more important than the treats.

- If you frequently give your cat treats off your plate, you should not complain when he is a pest at every mealtime.

We humans have a tendency to confuse food with love, and we like to extend this idea to our interactions with our pets. However, your cat does not really need treats, and will not mind or know the difference if he does not get any. Pet your cat frequently, play games, or just hang out together. These options are much better in the long run than over-doing it with the treats.
